Reasonbook

Pick up where the work left off.

Every new agent session starts cold. Reasonbook keeps what your project decided and why, and what’s still open, in a SQLite database in your repository, and brings it into the next session.

The reasoning is what gets lost.

A diff shows what changed. It doesn’t show what was tried first, what was decided and why, or what’s still open. That’s what the next session needs, whether the next session is an agent or a person.

How it works

  1. Record a decision and its reason.

You make the decisions. Your agent writes each one down with the reason, as it works.

  2. Start the next session with it.

In Claude Code and Codex, the Reasonbook plugin brings the record into each new session on its own. Without the plugin, one call to rbook_review returns the same digest.

The review also flags other projects on this machine that need a person, including decisions awaiting approval and blocked work.

  3. Add planning when the project needs it.

A new project starts as a Ledger of decisions and what you learned. Planner adds next steps. Builder adds sprints and missions with objectives and success criteria, and starting a mission brings up the past decisions that bear on it.

Local first. The dashboard is optional.

The record lives in your project’s SQLite database. You can record decisions, plan work and start the next session offline, without an account.

An optional account at reasonbook.ai adds a dashboard and messages between your projects. For projects you haven’t shared, the dashboard receives copies of the whole database, including pending and declined proposals. Upload status and failures appear in your session review.

A shared project keeps a local copy on each machine and exchanges changes through reasonbook.ai or directly over SSH. Direct sharing needs no dashboard account. Conflicting values stay visible until someone resolves them. Database uploads and automatic exchanges of shared changes have separate off switches. Read how sharing works

We build this site with it.

Every mission, decision and learning behind aquex.ai lives in Reasonbook, including the ones behind this page.

Two ways to start

Run it yourself.

Reasonbook is open source under Apache-2.0 and free to install from npm. It needs Node 20+. A project you started under CMOS keeps working. Reasonbook reads its record where it is and moves it to the new names when you’re ready. Follow the guide to set up a project and open your first session.

Reasonbook keeps what your team and your agents write down. It can’t tell you whether a decision was right. It requires a backup before restoring the database or pruning saved context snapshots, and attempts backups before and after a sprint closes. Keep your own backups before other destructive operations.
